Mission

The Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence (TFI) marshals the department's intelligence and enforcement functions with the twin aims of safeguarding the financial system against illicit use and combating rogue nations, terrorist facilitators, weapons of mass destruction (WMD) proliferators, money launderers, drug kingpins, and other national security threats.

Treasury Designates the Financial Network of Major Sinaloa Cartel Operator Rigoberto Gaxiola Medina – On August 5, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) named 14 companies and 17 individuals tied to drug trafficking kingpin Rigoberto Gaxiola Medina as specially designated narcotics traffickers (SDNTs). The designees, all based in Mexico, are now subject to economic sanctions pursuant to the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act.

Treasury Targets FARC Financiers and Drug-Traffickers – On July 31, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated six companies and 13 individuals that act on behalf of and materially assist the narcotics trafficking activities of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a designated narco-terrorist organization. This designation, made pursuant to the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act (Kingpin Act), is OFAC's fifth action against the FARC in the past eight months.

Treasury Designates Burmese State-Owned Enterprises – On July 29, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced financial sanctions against ten companies owned or controlled by the Government of Burma or its officials, including companies involved in the gem-mining industry. The action coincides with the President's signing of the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE (Junta's Anti-Democratic Efforts) Act of 2008, legislation aimed at extending sanctions against leaders of the Burmese military regime, those providing such leaders with economic and political support, their immediate family members, and the Burmese gem industry, an important source of revenue for the Burmese military regime.
