Richard Sargent, National Symphony Orchestra, Cellos

The "National Symphony, Cellos" is one of three watercolors painted by Richard Sargent depicting rehearsals of string instruments. Like many artists whose work remains in the Treasury Collection, Sargent began his government work for the Treasury-sponsored public Works of Art Project and later worked for the Relief Art Project which sent him to Florida. His Symphony series is the direct outcome of a commission that he received from Fortune Magazine illustrating life in Washington, D.C. for the magazine's 1934 Christmas edition.
