Sofa, 1861

This sofa is one of the most well documented objects in the Treasury Collection. Made in 1861 for Treasury's newly completed south wing, documentation exists for the carving of the eagles' head, modeling the cast iron feet and bronzing them. The fact that the feet were executed in cast iron may seem odd were it not for the fact that most of the decorative components of Treasury's south wing were made of cast iron. The sofa is one of a pair with cast iron feet that survive in the Treasury Collection with a large secretary bookcase treated in the same manner.
