Made in 1875 for the Philadelphia Customs House, this sofa is distinguished by a "US" shield carved on its crest. While it was not made for the Treasury Building, photographic documentation of Treasury offices depicts sofas that are stylistically similar. A sofa in a historic Treasury photograph served as the basis for the upholstery of this sofa when it was conserved for placement in the Salmon P. Chase Suite.
