Lily Fu was appointed Deputy General Counsel of the Department
of the Treasury on September 11, 2006. As Deputy General Counsel,
Ms. Fu serves as the principal assistant to the General Counsel,
who is the chief law officer of the Department. Her responsibilities
include providing legal and policy advice to senior Treasury officials,
as well as overseeing the operation of the Department’s Legal
Division, and managing the work of its approximately 2,000
lawyers.
Prior to joining the Treasury Department, Ms. Fu served as a Deputy in the Office of the Associate Attorney General at the Department of Justice. In that position, Ms. Fu had management and oversight responsibilities for a number of operating components and litigating divisions, including the Antitrust and Civil Divisions. She also handled special projects in conjunction with the Department’s other leadership offices.
Before entering government, Ms. Fu was a partner in the law firm of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw, where she served as the firm’s Washington hiring partner. At Mayer Brown, Ms. Fu represented corporations and executives in antitrust, class action and appellate litigation matters, and advised clients in connection with internal corporate and government investigations.
Ms. Fu received her undergraduate degree in 1990 from the University of Wisconsin, and her law degree in 1993 from the University of Minnesota, where she served as Managing Editor of the Minnesota Law Review. Following law school, Ms. Fu clerked for Judge Michael S. Kanne of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
