Administrative & Clerical Positions

The Secret Service is a federal law enforcement agency with headquarters in Washington, D.C. and over 125 offices throughout the United States and abroad. Congress charged the Secret Service with two responsibilities, protection of our nation's leaders and criminal investigations. The protective mission of the Secret Service includes protection of the President and Vice President of the United States; their immediate families; former Presidents and their spouses; widows and minor children of former Presidents; major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates and their spouses; and visiting foreign heads of state.

The Secret Service was established in 1865, solely to suppress the counterfeiting of U.S currency. Over the years, its investigative responsibilities have expanded to include the area of counterfeiting of currency and securities; forgery and altering of government checks and bonds; thefts and fraud relating to electronic funds transfer; financial access device fraud; identity fraud; telecommunications fraud; computer fraud; telemarketing fraud; and fraud concerning federally insured financial institutions.


Clerical Support Positions

Clerical support occupations involve data entry, typing, filing, answering telephones, and other support assistance for technical, administrative, and professional personnel. These positions require training, experience, or a working knowledge related to the tasks.

Eligibility

Applicants for Secret Service entry-level administrative support and clerical positions apply directly to the Secret Service when a vacancy announcement is open for a particular vacancy. Applicants who do not have government reemployment or transfer status can only apply for announcements where the area of consideration is "All Sources." Some positions require passing a written and/or typing test. In addition, if an applicant is not certified for typing proficiency, a typing proficiency test may be given by the Secret Service. Once both requirements have been met, an interview may be scheduled.

All Secret Service positions require a top secret security clearance. An applicant must be a citizen of the United States. All applicants tentatively selected for a position must submit to a urinalysis screening for illegal drug use prior to appointment.

  • Annual leave accumulates at a rate of 13 to 26 days each year depending on length of employment. Prior federal, civilian, or military service is counted toward the annual leave account.
